“I believe that the work we do in Parliament often seems to be at its most effective when we – the people’s elected representatives – move ourselves away from being the centre of the story.

When we listen, open ourselves up to conversations, and give voice to the people whose stories have not been heard.”

– Kate Thwaites MP

Kate is the Federal Member for Jagajaga and the voice in Canberra for our community. She lives locally with her family and is passionate about supporting people across Jagajaga.

Through the pandemic she has been advocating for people and businesses in our community to get the financial support they need, to be able to safely return home from overseas, and to get faster access to vaccines to keep us all safe.

The urgent need to act on climate change is one of the biggest issues consistently raised by residents across Jagajaga. Kate and Labor believe that we should be investing in a job-creating renewable energy future, urgently reducing emissions and protecting our local environment.

Kate is also pushing for action to confront social inequality and homelessness across Australia; for constitutional recognition of Australia’s First Peoples and to fix and protect the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Our aged care system is broken. Kate believes that older people who have helped build this country deserve to be respected and cared for. Our pensioners need support that they are just not getting from the current Government and millions of Australians have had to wait too long to get the support they have needed during the pandemic.

And as a former ABC reporter Kate also understands just how vital it is that we have a strong and properly funded public broadcaster. She will always fight for a strong and independent ABC.

Kate is passionate about supporting families to manage the juggle of work and home. She is working for reforms that will better support both men and women to share the care-giving load, with more affordable childcare, changes to workplace culture, and building on Australia’s Paid Parental Leave scheme so it encourages men to also take time out of the workforce to care for their children.

Kate has written and spoken about the need for a fundamental cultural shift in the way our national Parliament works; to make sure women are safe and their voices are heard in our Parliament.

“Labor started making it easier for parents to juggle work and family when we introduced Paid Parental Leave. It has made a huge difference in the lives of many Australians, but there is more work to be done…

We need to tell a new story about the important role that men can play as carers at home, so that men who want to take that opportunity feel that they can do so – without being viewed as a ‘unicorn’.”
